What the initiative is
Global societal challenges is one of three thematic priority areas in UiB's strategy towards 2030. The initiative brings together researchers and students from every faculty around questions no single discipline owns alone – from inequality and health to migration, democracy and sustainability.
From 2025, inequality is the unifying theme for the initiative. It gives the academic communities a shared starting point, while each discipline illuminates the challenge from its own angle.
Why UiB prioritizes global societal challenges
Global challenges cannot be confined to a single field. UiB therefore removes barriers between faculties and promotes interdisciplinary research and education. An academic steering group with representatives from every faculty leads the work.
The ambition is to contribute knowledge that matters – not only through research and education of a high international standard, but also by bringing that knowledge into the public sphere through arenas such as Bergen Global and the Bergen Summer Research School.
