Course description

Objectives and Content

Students will practice their knowledge about methods and theories, and through a field assignment, they will show how research problems, hypotheses and research plans are developed in the context of a human geography.

Participants get the opportunity to practice their knowledge about theories and methods in an empirical examination of a regional geographical problem. Theme and research problem are chosen in cooperation with the teaching staff. The field course is taught every year, either in Norway or abroad. After approval, it is possible to submit a semester assignment based on literature study.

Learning Outcomes

When writing the field report the students will use knowledge of central themes and theories in physical or environmental geography that she or he has acquired during the bachelor degree study.

The students will develop ability to accomplish a minor research project. She or he shall present a theme; elucidate theory and state scientific problem. Furthermore the student shall develop, independently and critically, an insight in relevant theory.

The students can chose to employ quantitative and/or qualitative field- and analysis methods. The field report will also give the students basic training in academic writing and reference technique.

University of Bergen and a field area either in Norway or abroad, preferably Europe. Field area will vary from one year to another.
Required Previous Knowledge
GEO115 - cartography. Either GEO221, GEO231, GEO282, GEO285 or equivalent knowledge in human geography, and course in methodology (GEO204/215/206) or equivalent. A minimum of 60 ECTS in geography is necessary before admission to GEO292.

Open, but limited places. Students at Bachelor“s program in Geography will be prioritized. If necessary will further prioritizing be according to number of study points in geography
Compulsory Assignments and Attendance
Obligatory participation in seminar and field course.
Forms of Assessment

Field report and oral exam.

A group of 2-3 students will write a field report of maximum 30 pages jointly. The oral exam is individual.
